Updates
  • The orphanage is ready for final inspection, but the inspection has not been made due to the present situation in Kenya.
  • Money has been donated to purchase additional land near the orphanage and the owner is talking with Humphrey and his team.
  • Money has also been donated to purchase a vehicle for Humphrey. (The entire amount has now been donated and the team in Kenya are looking for a suitable vehicle.) At the present time, Humphrey spends a great deal of time walking or catching rides so that he can visit the different villages to check on the orphans who are sponsored. He also travels to Nairobi to purchase supplies for the orphanage as well as to take care of administrative business with the orphanage. A car would greatly cut down on his time spent walking or seeking rides and would make Humphrey more independent and mobile to carry out the different jobs he has to accomplish.
  • There are still children who need sponsors. If you would like to sponsor a child, please contact Louise Mell at 770-218-7442 or email her at Louise.Mell@experian.com. Also, if anyone would like a copy of the DVD "Faces of Kenya" that was shown at the program in August, please see Louise. The team is asking for a small donation toward the orphanage fund for the DVD.

LETTER FROM KENYA

This is an email sent by Daniel Murage. He is a volunteer (part of the Kenya Connection team in Kenya) and helps Humphrey at the orphanage and helps care for the kids in Chuka and Cheera. These are his words and thoughts and feelings after he and Humphrey and some others from the Kenya team went to one of the refuge camps to minister to the people there.

Hello everybody,

Hope my mail gets you in health. Am doing great and the kids are so well too. I am thanking God that Peace is resuming back in the country and I hope and pray that it shall root itself in the nation and no more ugly scenes shall the nation experience.  Am Thankful that Mars Hill took it in their hearts as a burden to pray the Nation and God has really worked through your prayers and may His name be praised.

We went to visit the displaced families in Nairobi and we spent the whole of the afternoon playing games with kids. We had lots of Games and it was such a beautiful afternoon.

When I looked at what those displaced people are going through I couldn't help but shed a tear. Well-wishers am glad have donated food, clothing to these displaced people and when I saw how they queued to secure at least a shirt or a shoe since all he owned was what he/wore it was so painful.

I took some time with some few people and what I got from them was moving stories. Majority lost all they ever owned on this  earth and including their houses and homes the only place they called home, many had nowhere to go and spending the next entire life in that National trade fair (where they are currently camping) seemed almost to be the only option.

I talked to a certain lady and as I tried to console her by saying that am praying for peace to resume. She said to me even if it does resume she has lost all she had and doesn't have an idea of where to start again. She lost one of children in fire that consumed her house and all that they owned.

A certain little girl called Faith came to me and as we playing she asked me a strange question.
"Are guys from Uganda?"
"No! Why do you ask?"
"You must be because am told there is war in Kenya!"
This made me cry. It was so hard to explain to her what was going on. I felt like she was asking me "why are we really fighting, what are we really fighting for?"

Chuka among other areas has not been affected by the skirmishes and I didn't have an idea of what really was the situation at hand, so when I saw those displaced people it was so touching.

Lots Of God's Love
Daniel.

Kenya Connection at North Cobb High School

The Marietta Daily Journal article on the mission trip prompted a teacher for 2 magnet classes at North Cobb High School to request a presentation on the trip for her classes. Jennifer Biddy coordinated the effort that resulted in Louise Mell and Cindy Turner making a presentation to the classes on Tuesday, November 13. Their presentation focused on 3 areas: how the trip got started (a result of Humphrey coming to Mars Hill Presbyterian Church), the leadership skills needed to plan and carry out the trip and the long term affects the trip will have on Chuka and Acworth. Cindy presented a shortened version of the program given to the church in August and showed the Faces of Kenya DVD. The response from the class members and teachers was moving and positive. The teacher challenged the students to think about how they are going to make a difference and also reminded them that all the members of the mission team were from the local area. It was also noted that Paul Mell graduated from North Cobb just like all of them will. The students also decided to help collect shoes for the container and possibly help with some fundraising projects.
